Britanny Ferries
Northern france in general, and Britanny in particular, has been a favourite family holiday destination since the 1970s. Despite fierce competition from destinations further afield that are increasingly accessible via cheap airlines Britanny remains as popular as ever, and if anything popularity is once again on the rise in a day and age where families frequently take two or even three holidays a year. There are also a growing number of people purchasing second homes in continental Europe, and Britanny offers the perfect balance between between French charm and practical accessibility.
Although Britanny ferries are longer than crossings to Normandy or Picardy they provide holidaymakers with an attractive alternative if they're actually holidaying in Britanny itself. Likewise expatriots and those with holiday homes located in Britanny typically prefer ferries that run directly to Britanny.
The only two destination ports that are options for Britanny ferries are Saint Malo and Roscoff. The ferry crossing to Saint Malo departs from Portsmouth (with up to 24 crossing per week during the summer) while the Roscoff ferry departs from Plymouth, and is the longer of the two crossings to Britanny. Either route will save considerable driving time and fuel expenses if visiting Britanny, although prices for the crossings themselves will usually be more expensive that shorter ferry crossings to Dover or Boulogne.
Because the ferry crossings themselves take longer there is the option of daytime or overnight ferries. If you opt for an overnight crossing we recommend you book a cabin to make sure you get some good rest before starting your holiday in Britanny, while a daytime crossing allows you to fully enjoy the journey itself.
