Dover to Dunkirk Ferries
The Dover to Dunkirk ferry route is serviced by Norfolkline, with frequent daily crossings (as many as 12 per day) each taking approximately 2 hours. Although not as popular as the Dover to Calais crossing, if you're planning a touring holiday then Dunkirk is well located for access to Holland, Belgium and Germany, as well as European holiday destinations further afield.
Ferries from Dover
Dover is the largest ferry port in the UK and faces France across the narrowest part of the English Channel, the Straits of Dover. From Dover it's only 22 miles to France and despite crossing the busiest shipping lane in the world ferries can reach France faster from Dover than any other port. In addition to car ferries bound for France the port of Dover is also used by cruise ships.
Dover is easy to reach, with good road links - the A20 connects the town to Folkestone, while the A2 leads to Cantebury and beyond. Made famous in song the "White Cliffs of Dover" are distinctive and can easily be seen from France on a clear day.
Ferries to Dunkirk
Dunkirk (Dunkerque in French) lies only 6 miles from the border of Belgium, and as such is the Northern-most port in France. It is also the third largest harbour in France, following Le Havre and Marseille. Norfolk Line operate a regular ferry service between Dover and Dunkirk with approximately 28 crossings daily.
Dunkirk was made famous in World War II by the "Miracle of Dunkirk" when over 900 evacuated over 330,000 members of the Allied forces (including 123,000 French soldiers). During the time that it was under German occupation Dunkirk was heavily bombed and the town was largely destroyed. Many of the people who visit Dunkirk today come to pay their respects to those who gave their lives in defence of the town.
