Ferries from Newhaven
Newhaven enjoys excellent road and rail links with the rest of the UK and is situated between Brighton and Eastbourne at the mouth of the river Ouse. Although not as popular as Dover, Newhaven is actually the closest port to London operating ferries to France.
Although LD Lines used to run a summer ferry service from Newhaven to Le Havre this has now been discontinued and there is now only one ferry route departing from Newhaven; Newhaven to Dieppe. There has been a Newhaven to Dieppe ferry crossing since 1847 though, so it looks like the Newhaven to Dieppe route is here to stay.
Newhaven played an important role during World War I, when it was comandeered by the military and used as the primary port of departure to Europe. During this time the harbour was substantially expanded, and in WWII the Dieppe Raid was launched from Newhaven harbour.
Ferries to Dieppe
Although served by limited ferry services, Dieppe is probably the prettiest of the French ferry ports. In the 15th century Dieppe was the most important port in Normandy but in 1694 many buildings were destroyed when the town was beseiged by an enemy fleet. Following this the town was rebuilt in the classic style and became a favourite among the aristocracy. Modern day visitors and holidaymakers come to explore the 15th century castle and sample Dieppes famous scallops.
